Hillbillies & Vikings

This site is focused broadly on all descendants of John Denboe, an indentured servant who came to the Crown Colony of Maryland in about the year 1664. Also, it maintains a special emphasis on the descendants of John Denbow (1797-1862) and his brother Bazeleel (1795-1857), early pioneers in the hills of Southeastern Ohio, as well as the descendants of Jón Jónsson (1841-1934) of Dalasýsla, Iceland, who was an Icelandic immigrant to Canada and now has progeny throughout North America.

Researching the Ohio 1850 Census makes sense because he was married in 1847 in Washington, Ohio, USA and he died in 1857 in Washington, Ohio, USA. The 1850 census is important because it was the first U.S. census to list all family members, not just the head of household. Some background on Bazeleel DENBOW [1036]: He was born in 1795 in Maryland, USA, and he died on 20-JUN-1857 in Washington, Ohio, USA. He married Mary ANN [125] on 1810, and had the following children: Vincent [1445] (1819), Nancy [1342] (1820), Sarah [1398] (1823), Catherine [1059] (1824), Thomas [1437] (1833), and Elisah [1112] (1834). He married SARAH Elder [3723] on 30-SEP-1847 in Washington, Ohio, USA. His parents were Thomas DENBOW [1432] (b. 1765, d. 1826 in Harford, Maryland, USA), and Unknown UNKNOWN [15] (b. 1766, d. 1833).

Here is what this family might look like in 1850: Head Of Household: DENBOW, Bazeleel

1663 Richard Gramlich in 2003 said about his biological father, mother and his adoptive father: "Emma Pearl (known by everyone as Pearl) was born 5-8-1917 in Monroe County. She had an out-of-wedlock son in 1934 [that's me]. She was 16 when the child was conceived, 17 when born. The father, a Michael Zlate, age 23 at the time, upon learning of the pregancy, took off, never to be seen again & hardly ever heard of. Recent resarch indicates he had 3-4 successful meat markets in Cleveland, Ohio. He married & died in Cleveland. He is survived only by 2 living daughters. One son died in a boating accident when he was in his 20s. The out-of-wedlock son acknowledges only that he was his biological father -- absolutely nothing more. He regards his father as Otto Joseph Costa, Emma Pearl's husband. He was everything a father should be -- an excellent father in all ways. Thank you Dad!!!!" Zlate, Michael (I4713)

1673 Rush was apparently her maiden name. Mann book lists Rush as maiden name but has her last name as Williamson even before she married Linus, her apparent first marriage. I assume that this was a scribal error, since the key in the book indicates names in parentheses are maiden names, and Rush was in parentheses.

1676 Ruth's last name is spelled so many different ways in various documents relating to her and to other members of the family that I've made a decision in each case to spell it the way it was in that particular document. So you will see the name spelled Tanner, Tennor, Tennar, Tenner, etc. -- in this database. I can find nothing definitive to date that shows a "right way" or even an "accepted way" to spell this name. My g2grandmother, Ruth, named her son James Tanner Denbow, so that is my personal preference. Tanner, Ruth (I4254)
